Convention Recap: Christmas on Madison 2024

TRANSPARENCYEVENT RECAP

12/18/20241 min read

Every year I end my event season with Christmas on Madison, as hosted by one of my favorite places on the planet: Southern Art and Makers Collective. This year was no different in location, but a bit different in tone (for me). You see my friend Heather, who is one of the owners, couldn't be there. Because Heather recently had a recurrence of her cancer.

Heather has been a friend of mine for years. I have spent hours up there at the shop, idling away the hours with her as we solve all of the City of Montgomery's problems - at least in our own minds. A long time supporter of the arts, she has been one of my biggest fans for years, and is quick to recommend 'Haw'rd' Marsh in the thickest Sand Mountain accent you've ever heard. She's the person who taught me the benefit of having a small something on the table.

She's my friend.

So for a quick recap, because I know that is what folks are here for:

  • It was brutally cold, which hurt attendance.

  • Many attendees have already bought my books in past years.

  • So sales were low.

  • Despite that I will keep doing this event because I love this space and people, and by god this is how I end my selling year: surrounded by my local favs.

I sold 75 bucks worth, but I told the shop to keep it all, and gift it to Heather. It may come as a shock, but co-owner of a small arts collective in small business unfriendly Montgomery isn't a pathway to millions. So if you have a couple bucks to share, maybe consider showing my friend a little love. Beating cancer is hard enough, without the stress of having to worry about missing work. If you have ever gotten value from my recaps, here is a chance to pay it forward.
