Frolicon is a nerdy kink convention.
I am not what I would consider a kinky guy. But I am a guy who will try pretty much any sort of event at least once. The track director for Frolicon's writers track had been asking me to come be a guest for a few years now, so I finally decided to give it a go.
I was supposed to be there all three days. But my day job had some major fires that meant I couldn't get Friday off. And I didn't have any panels on Sunday. So I opted to just come Saturday. I stayed in a super sketchy hotel on Friday night in Union City, and got to the convention disgustingly early on Saturday. So early that no one was awake to get me my badge for about two hours. So I just chilled and read a book (Mage Tank if you're interested, I'm digging it so far).
Knowing I was just there for the day, and not being sure of what the shared authors alley spaces were going to be like, I opted to pack super light. Instead of my (fucking awesome) toughbuilt cases, I just rolled in with a small suitcase.
It held: 6 omnibus 1s, 8 books 1s, a possum, my money, my business cards/stickers, a skeletal hand, book stands, and a table cloth. That's 400 bucks in inventory. So now I know, should I get invited to an event I have to fly to, I can carry that much in a small suitcase. Good to know.
Anyway, I had no idea what to expect.
But with a couple of days to think on it: 95% of the time its pretty much exactly like any other three day nerdy con I've ever been a part of. Honestly, not much different from say, Thursday Night at Dragon Con, with folks heading to the bunny hutch party.
That other 5% consists of someone buck ass naked walking up to your booth to look at your books.
I know it's more than that, obviously, but I didn't go into those spaces. I just hung out in the author island or in the panel room. They have much more kinky spaces, but ya boi was there to sell books and panel, so I sold books and paneled. Not yucking anyone's yum, I just wasn't there to partake of the
The other part of that 5% is that honestly it was probably the friendliest con I've ever been to. I'd had a lingering fear leading up to it that it would be creepy, or there would be folks who left me feeling uncomfortable. But everyone was just chill, and nice, and welcoming.
And sometimes naked.

I have a few small thoughts.
I won't lie, I was a little worried that I was going to see...more...of someone I know really well than I really wanted to see. That was not the case. I will be able to look everyone in the eye lol.
I shared my table with an author who I know has read this blog in the past. So yeah, she rocks, and is a great table partner.

Going forward I won't be giving details about the panels, in the effort of saving time. Just a list, though I will probably give some top level insights where relevant.
In this case, I will note that these panels were all hour and a half long panels, as that is the standard length of all panels/workshops at the event.
Here are the three I did on Saturday:
Fear and Fetish: The Intersection of Horror and Kink
Writers' Burnout and How to Revive Yourself
Podcasting for Writers: From Guest to Creator

Well, when you aren't at the booth all that much, didn't bring much inventory or booth setup stuff, and cover your expenses in the first hour basically, you kinda just...vibe. I spent most of my time chatting, and not trying to pull folks for sales.
