Event Recap: Montevallo Backyard Book Festival

TRANSPARENCYEVENT RECAP

Last weekend I took part in the Montevallo Backyard Book Festival. This is an annual book fest that takes place outside in a really pretty park behind the library in Montevallo Alabama. This was my second year, and it was a good time! So let's dig in.

First of all, the weather was pretty much as perfect as you could possibly hope for. It was a little cool when I was setting up my pavilion, but pretty soon it warmed up a bit and a nice cooling breeze came on. I never got hot, which as a portly lad in the south, is a true miracle.

On the selling front, it wasn't as good as last year. Last year I sold 15 books and 3 zines. This year I sold 9 books and 7 zines. Which, sure, that's only a six book difference. The big difference is that last year 8 of those books were omnibus editions, which sell for 40 bucks each. This year I sold...none. Every book I sold was a Book 1, except for one repeat customer coming to get Book 2. So even though I sold, very loosely close to the same numbers (less books but more zines), I made half what I did last year.

Is this a canary in the coal mine that folks are freaked out by the war in Iran and higher gas prices? Maybe. Too soon to tell.

Regardless, I had a great time, and got to talk to a lot of fun people. It was a day well spent!

I have a few small thoughts.

  • This event gets local college kids and the like to volunteer to help set up pavilions and such. That's such a nice touch.

  • Fuck I love food trucks.

It ain't none.

Ok, I think I said all that needs to be said about my sales up above. So lets just get to the numbers.
